A Pause For Beauty

One ought every day at least to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture,
and if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words.

The quality of our lives depends, in part, on the quality of the questions we are willing to explore.

Nowhere and never
And now and for ever
I look for a thing
That is looking for me.
- Sydney Carter

The quality of our lives depends, in part, on the quality of the questions we are willing to explore.
Who am I? What do I want out of life? What is stopping me?
What important realization lies just outside my concept of reality?
What can I learn from you?
How can we make each other’s lives richer?
How can we enlarge our concept of what is possible in life? This one wild and precious life, to paraphrase Mary Oliver — what possibilities does it offer that I’ve not yet considered?
Always, the search for knowledge, for new ways of seeing, for an enlarged concept of what life is really about.

So eager were the Nez Perce to possess the goods or new ideas of friend and foe alike that, on encountering an enemy in the field, they sometimes delayed fighting, under a flag of truce, for however long it took them to exchange goods. Not until the bartering was completed would lines be drawn and the two tribes withdraw to begin the conflict. ...In their passion for novelty, the Nez Perces are even reputed to have once sent scouts to spy on Crow ceremonies in order to obtain new dances, and shortly after meeting Lewis and Clark they sent three tribesmen as far as the frontier town of St. Louis in order to obtain the white man's religion. So it is not surprising after all that upon hearing exciting reports regarding horses, the Nez Perces quickly came to the conclusion that they ought to have some. Around 1740 they pooled the resources of several villages and sent an emissary loaded with goods to Ute territory to trade for some of the strange beasts, although they had no notion how to ride the animal and no neighbor to teach them.
