A Pause For Beauty

One ought every day at least to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture,
and if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words.

The Beauty In Common Things

Respect the common things. They are common because they survived.
- John C. Gifford,
Living by the Land

The essence of real beauty may be gathered from the commonplace, from what lies close around us in life. By learning to appreciate this truth, our lives will doubtless be enriched and ennobled.

Stories From Interesting Lives

It’s been six months since the relaunch of Heron Dance. I’m always thinking about ways to improve it. In particular, I’ve been thinking about the common area that encompasses both what I’ve found most interesting in doing this work and what readers have told me they most enjoy and appreciate.

We all seem to like stories — stories of searchers and seekers — human stories of lives well-lived — challenges, successes, failures, contradictions, meaning, the search for and occasional discovery of peace. Yesterday’s profile of Frank Casper is an example, but going forward I’ll include my own reflections what on these people say and experience. Sometimes I’ll excerpt the work of others, sometimes the post will draw from the roughly 200 interviews I’ve done for Heron Dance and sometimes I’ll write my own profiles drawing from memoirs and biographies. I’ll offer one or two of these a week.

In order to put the required time and thought into this effort, the other posts will be shorter than recent offerings. The quotes in today’s Pause For Beauty above are an example.

See the Heron Dance website home page for more.

Heron Dance is an evolving creative work. Thanks for joining me on the journey.
