A Pause For Beauty

One ought every day at least to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture,
and if it were possible, to speak a few reasonable words.
- Goethe

. . .

Focusing on your uniqueness is the way of nature.

Your focus determines your reality.
- George Lucas

Concentration is my motto.
     - Andrew Carnegie

Beware of dissipating your powers; strive constantly to concentrate them. Genius thinks it can do whatever it sees others doing, but it can’t.
- Goethe

A heron doesn’t try to out-fly an eagle; a heron develops its own specialized way of catching fish. It finds its own separate niche in the ecosystem, and focuses there.

Where is the place of your own unique harmony with the ecosystems that surround, with the energies that flow around us? Focus there. Focus effort where it will have a positive impact. And focus energy on one project where you can make a maximum, unique contribution, rather than dispersing your efforts.

There are lots of problems in the world, lots of examples of aggression, brutality, of dishonesty and selfishness. We can’t fix those. Look for the positive energies that flow around us, and connect with those, hook into those, add your positive energy to those. Look for endeavors where one plus one equals three.

A Taoist teaching addresses this key principle. Find points of leverage where small amounts of effort yield major results. This principle, known as “wu-wie”, tells us to move in harmony with the forces, visible and invisible, that surround. We exist in a variety of personal, business and natural ecosystems, all of which are much bigger than we are. We can’t outpower them.

Meditation can play a role. Many of the forces that swirl around us are invisible and subtle. We need to tune into them on levels that can’t be put into words, that must be sensed rather than fully understood. Meditation can help us make connections with forces that can't be surround.

Proactive people focus their efforts in the Circle of influence. They work on the things they can do something about. The nature of their energy is positive, enlarging and magnifying, causing their Circle of Influence to increase.
Reactive people, on the other hand, focus their efforts in the Circle of Concern. They focus on the weakness of other people, the problems in the environment, and circumstances over which they have no control. Their focus results in blaming and accusing attitudes, reactive language, and increase feelings of victimization. The negative energy generated by that focus, combined with neglect in area they could do something about, causes their Circle of Influence to shrink.
      - Stephen Covey, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

I planned always to make the enemy commit his reserves on a wide front; having forced him to do this I then committed my own reserves on a narrow front in a hard blow.
      - Field Marshall Montgomery
