Creativity As A Way Of Life
Read every day something no one else is reading.
Think something no one else is thinking.
It is bad for the mind to be always a part of unanimity.
- Christopher Morley
. . .
Sometimes the dance emerges out of a life, sometimes it is lost.
Art is not a luxury! Art arises from one's depths or it is not art but kitsch! Art, for me, is and was my digging tool for Meaning, for Truth. . . my own truth that may speak to your truth. Art then becomes a religious, a spiritual act, not in any sectarian sense but as a witness to a religious attitude to sheer being, to existence as such, being Supremely Meaningful.
- Frederick Franck, from the booklet Pacem In Terris.
Trees dance
Even on the stillest days.
The dance forms
In the upward arc of the trunk
And explodes
As the canopy catapults
Into the sunlight.
Function cannot
Abide the spontaneity
Of the dance.
The tree is milled,
Its dance buried
Beneath planes and right angles.
I work the milled cube with mallet and gouge
Feeling for the dance.
Sometimes the dance favors the bowl.
Sometimes it is lost.
- Kees Wagenvoord, bowl maker, from the artist statement that accompanies his bowls
. . .
The dance
Sometimes it evolves, emerges
Out of a life
Sometimes it is lost.
The fragile flame of your dance:
Your creative vision, your dreams.
How do you protect them?
What are you doing to nurture them?
How will you make them real?
