A Pause for Beauty:

An artist’s journal.

In the great night my heart will go out

In the great night my heart will go out
Toward me the darkness comes rattling
In the great night my heart will go out.
                           - Papago song

When I have . . . a terrible need . . .shall I say the word? . . . of religion. Then I go out at night and paint the stars.
- Vincent Van Gogh

When I went out under the trees last night, heard the chirping of the first
crickets, the dreaming trill of frogs, just as the yellow moon rested on the far hills, there seemed such peace, serenity and comfort in the unfolding night, with its soft scented air.
- Harlan Hubbard from
Payne Hollow Journal. This is the entry for May 13, 1962

Journal note:

To sit alone by a big old tree deep in the woods
For a couple of hours at night, in the dark
Is to know nature, and yourself, in a new way.
